5 Ways to Encourage your Children's Prayer Life
Hi Beautiful!
Here are five ways to pray with your children.
I know my prayer life can go up and down and the best way to remain consistent and steadfast is by sticking to a schedule and having the right intention. I think the same goes for our little ones, they need us to help jump-start a relationship with the Lord.
Well here are five ways to encourage your child’s prayer life.
I have always incorporated Christ into my little one's life. We are the example to be set for our younger ones. I always study the word around my children, pray and join hands with them, and encourage them to pray and think of God. I also play worship music around them as well as go to church.
It's so important to encourage your children to do many new and beneficial things from early on and that goes for anything.
Talk to your children about how and why God loves them.
I find joy in seeing my children understand God’s love and attempt to live out their lives the way God intended them to. You as a parent need to understand how God loves us all and that your children are created for a purpose.
Here are some ways to explain to your little ones how and why God loves them. I always like breaking down scripture and singing songs about it, so that a bit of it sticks with them.
A good scripture to explain to the kiddies is
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Psalm 139:14
means that they were made with pride, beauty and wonders, God made no mistake when bringing us here
and also
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 their minds will trail off knowing that God knew we would all be here before time began and that purpose they have means they have so much to give their family, friends and the world.
These two scriptures can also explain how much love you as a parent have for them and that God created you all. Don’t forget to let them know that God protects them, hears them - even their prayers and He is our friend.
2. Sing songs and watch videos about Jesus at
In our home with sing about everything, and I mean everything.
I love making up little riddles to get the children’s attention and to make them laugh.
Praise is so important, God loves when we praise Him and worship Him.
There are so many songs and worship songs on YouTube, and literally, that is where I always go-to for music. The kids have their YouTube account, so I just subscribe to all the gospel kids channels and it’s all there to choose from. We end up dancing and singing around the house about Jesus and His word - yay!
3. Invite them to pray with you
Inviting children to pray with you creates a beautiful bond and unity. Here are some prayer tips/points to help encourage your little ones. These will be great to share with others and even put into a gift card for parents with newborn babies as a great start.
If you have read Luke 18, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. The Lord’s prayer is a good introduction to your children and explains to them to come boldly to the Lord.
When you invite your children to come and pray with you, it creates an environment of love and a familiar application to life. Praying isn’t a separate part of life or a secretive thing, it is part of our walk with Christ. Your children will be able to hear your words, see your body language and mannerisms and feel comfortable around those who pray.
I think it’s important to invite children in as I can hold their hands and cuddle, I encourage them to give thanks and say Amen at the end. They always smile and shout it out almost like an achievement. Sometimes we go through the five finger prayer, to make sure we don’t miss anyone when praying.
You can also teach them the Lord’s prayer and get them to finish off prayer prompts, for example, “I love you God because…” and “Thank you, God, for…”
4. Give them their own bible and books about God
A great way to encourage children to read their bible is to get them a bible, journal, pens and stationery. Let them get stuck in right away, making notes and drawing about all they hear from God and learn from you teaching them.
Writing notes is such a great way to teach them about God and pray. I know I always write my prayers down, a great way to come back to it and see what the Lord has done for you.
There are books about each lesson and people from the bible to help us get a feel of the parables and teachings of all the special people God chose to do great things for His people.
Writing and reading is also a great way to help your child pray about what they are called to be. Most of the time our purpose shows up right away in childhood, it's just that life happens and we lose focus.
How amazing would it be for you to encourage your child and pray with them about what God has called them to, and as a parent you are able to remind them of this as they grow.
5. Set a devotion routine with them
As well as prayer time there should be some time spent talking and finding out what Jesus got up to in the bible.
I find these times really create discussions and thinking points as well as bonding time. Plus we all need a gentle reminder every now and again about the good works of Jesus.
Speak with your children about what they want to learn if they are a bit older and the young ones pick a good time in the week to have a few words about Christ and build up and make longer as they grow, so devotion time is a part of their growing lives.
There are many children’s devotion books on Amazon and eBay, and I’m sure if you google ‘devotion for children there would be many that come up to suit your needs.
Some great points to follow; always pray first with them to set the tone, set a day, have a recap day and set some affirmations from your study together.
There are many great topics to talk about and learn such as the Armour of God, Fruits of the Spirit, God’s promises and the 10 commandments.
How amazing! I always love teaching my children about the Fruits of the Spirit.
“When you invite your children to come and pray with you,
it creates an environment of love and a familiar application to life.”
Children are sponges and products of their environment, it would be beautiful and amazing if they retained everything learned in life and used it in their everyday lives. Be relaxed with them and be great leaders, if they don’t want to get so involved just yet that’s totally fine.
Continue to pray for and with them and invite them in, just as Jesus does with us every day, He waits ever so patiently but is always there.
